In addition to the fabulous shoes, Clarabella has a slew of new merch from both new and returning designers. There are so many perfect little summer accessories in here, I’m not quire sure how I manage to leave every day without something new draped around my neck/in my ears/on my shoulder/on my feet;). Check it out: (and sorry for the photos… the lighting isn’t so great in here today…)
Blumera
A new line of handbags designed by Mehera Blum. In her travels to Bali, Mehera fell in love with the colors and the richness of the Balinese leather and was mesmerized by the local craftsmanship. After seeing these bags, without even travelling to Bali, I think you’ll feel the same way. Each bag is completely handmade by artisans in Bali alongside Mehera.
Baba G
What’s this, you ask? Baby accessories at Clarabella? Yes indeed. The season is here, the sun is high in the sky and those soft little baby heads can be rather prone to too much sun. What better wat to avoid that than to buy your little sweetheart a little handmade cotton hat. Beautifully hand crafted and lightweight, these hats are near and dear to my heart. I’m sure I wore something similar when I was just a little ‘eri’ because they are handmade by my mom. Just stunning just like she is:)
Tyra Davis
Ms. Davis holds one of the most admirable professions I know: she is a teacher. She teaches middle school in Harlem and I can only assume that no matter how much she loves and cherishes her kids, making these earrings is something of a release;). And what a way to release - these earrings are perfect for summer. Hand crafted with bright blue lucite, turquoise stones, geometric wooden hoops and more!
Amy Tavern
Amy is a true metalsmith… Her innovation and skill is apparent in her designs. Only two of her current lines are represented at the shop, but man are they awesome. One is a combination of Steel and Gold. The rings are expertly crafted from steel - really the look of oxidized silver - and welded together with 18k gold. So subtle and so lovely! Her Egg and Bean series uses shapes from (you guessed it) eggs and beans. She uses colorful plastics and sterling silver to create earrings and necklaces. The pictures don’t do them justice, you have to come see them in person.
Jene DeSpain
I met Jene through fabulous shop owner, Ashley Hanosh, and am so glad for the connection! Jene is based out in San Francisco and has a cool elegance to her designs. All of her pieces are crafted using 14K gold fill and the most stunning stones. Hoops, dangles, necklaces, all named after an exotic locale. Wearing one of her designs might even transport you there;).
I love shoes… I just do. I’ve been surprisingly good about not buying up all of the shoes in the shop, but that stops here;). I think that I might just snag a pair of the shiny heels for myself. Run ladies, don’t walk, down to Clarabella because we finally got the new shipment of Mariana heels in. In a very attractive array of colors, tall heels and small heels… you don’t want to be the last one to pick these up!!
CHECK OUT THE SHOES:)
[for some reason, my website hates me today and every time I try to upload photos, it skews them, replaces them with something else, or something else really bizarre… rather than try to again, I’m sending you to flickr for some shoe fun!!]
ArtCal is a fantastic site/weekly mailer that gives information about new galleries and show openings with a strong focus on underknown galleries and artists. I sent out a press release and information about this week’s opening for Shaun Kardinal a few weeks ago with a reminder last week and have been sitting here with crossed fingers and toes, hoping to get a listing. Well, the finger crossing must have worked because Clarabella and Shaun Kardinal showed up in this week’s mailer! Check it out here and for easy reference, I’m pasting the whole dang thing below;). Many thanks to the ArtCal team - this means to much!!

New to the Lower East Side art scene, boutique/gallery CLARABELLA is pleased to present BUILDINGS, the inaugural New York City exhibit from Seattle based photographer, Shaun Kardinal. Photographing rooftops has been a hobby of the artist’s for many years. Though an avid digital artist in his teens, it was not until his twenty-third year with an antique medium-format camera in hand that Kardinal developed an absolute passion for the subject. It was the way the buildings looked as he gazed through the viewfinder, playing with the vibrancy of Seattle’s sunsets, the richness of her summers, the austere dullness of her grey winters. It was a love affair with a new city encouraging familiarity, ushering these monoliths in as kin, good friends, integral parts of Kardinal’s daily walks to and from work. In this way, his photographs are meant to be seen as intimate portraits.
These buildings, at once solitary and full of life, seem to play with and against each other: three skyscrapers playfully fall against one another; an isolated wall dares to stand alone; a telephone pole bisects a brick building, while sagging lines tease its rooftop; four more in four corners, never to embrace; another still, reflects on the day as the sun plays its final notes on a bright pink sky.

Today, June 26, Mocean Worker (AKA Adam Dorn) gets a big shout out and congrats on the big release day for his latest album ‘Cinco de MOWO’. Not familiar? Check him out through his Clarabella page or his website and for your special viewing pleasure, go to Spinner AOL Music to check out the new video for Shake Your Boogie. It’s well worth the visit;). Congrats Adam!
(ps - I tried embedding the video in this post, but it kept messing up the blog format… any tips?)
Yay! It’s Friday! And it’s just stunning outside… really. Who’s meeting me for a nice crisp glass of white wine after work? Anyone?;)

Okay, I’m *really* writing to tell you about an upcoming show at a Gallery in the LES that isn’t Clarabella. The Aidan Savoy Gallery is located at 175 Stanton Street (between Clinton and Attorney). It’s a fantastic little space with that highly coveted exposed brick, smooth wood floors and more importantly an impressive lineup of artists. I’ve told you all about Paige before, but I’ll tell you again - Paige is Michael Paige Glover, a fantastically talented artist based right here in New York. Paige will be a part of the next group show at The Aidan Savoy Gallery. The opening is on July 12 - all the info is listed below. Won’t you join me there?

Let’s be honest, a girl can never have enough accessories. Another undeniable truth, a girl can never pass up a good sale. Music industry maven turned shop owner Erin Whelan is commissioning up-and-coming jewelry designers, and friends, Judith Haas and Rebecka Froberg for a trunk sale Wednesday, June 13th. Besides the fact that it’s utterly adorable that these girlfriends came together for more than just happy hour in a true demonstration of feminism at it’s finest, the jewelry is ridiculously cute, and the prices will never be this low again. If you’re into good deals, good people, and complementary wine and cheese, your search can end right now.Trunk Show featuring Judith Haas and Rebecka FrobergWednesday, June 13th; 6pm–9pm Clarabella |
Yesterday was fabulous! I’m sure there are lots of you out there that truly appreciate a day off. There are more that probably take weekends for granted like I used to. Just another couple of days off, no big deal. Since the shop opened up, I haven’t had many of those. Mondays are my ‘days off’ but I’ve only just started to really take them off. I don’t think I’ll be able to do it every Monday as there is always more to do around here, but I’ll do it as often as I can. Yesterday morning, rather than using the day to sleep in, I got up, packed a little day bag and headed to 34th St. and the FDR to grab the Seastreak Ferry. You should all know about this ferry for the summer as it’s super easy and takes its passengers directly from Manhattan to the Jersey Shore. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a beautiful day like I did. Sitting on the top deck allowed for a 45 minute bask in the sun before arriving at the Highlands stop to meet my family down there. It was a fantastic day and I hope it will become a regular trip over the summer. A little ‘mini-vacation’;).
[update - the photos kept switching and it was driving me batty, so I took them down - sorry;)]
NOW LISTENING to my ‘jazzy’ mix including music by Betty Carter, Ella Fitzgerald, Madeleine Peyroux, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Abbey Lincoln and Mocean Worker. gooooooood.
I should really get a better camera to take night photos… or… I should get the better camera that I already got and broke fixed;).
Regardless, I did take a few photos on my ride home last night - and a few more very blurry ones of the fireworks that I saw from my window last night. You can view them here and one of the photos is posted below.
I forgot to tell you all about the fireworks! I was in my kitchen and started hearing the distant pop of fireworks. I ignored it at first. I’ve heard those noises in the past and have never really been able to see any of the fireworks. They kept going and I was eventually drawn to the window. The fireworks were visible just past the Williamsburg Bridge and ended up going on for about 20 minutes. It was really pretty beautiful and the fact that I could step out on my fire escape and watch them all was even more amazing. Again, I love my neighborhood and even more, I love my apartment!!
Have a good night all -
E
Well, I’ve been a bit delinquent today. After all the noise I made in the last post about the Renegade Craft Fair yesterday, I didn’t end up going! I know I know… horrible;). But that doesn’t mean that you can’t! It’s open until 6pm today. It’s such a beautiful sunny day out today - a great day for walking around Williamsburg.
Anyway, I was only a little bit delinquent because even though I didn’t make to the craft fair, I still got up at 6:45, got into my running gear and went on up to Central Park. Today was the Father’s Day Fight Against Prostate Cancer 5M run. I was a little nervous because I haven’t done a race in a while, but man it felt good! I forgot how much fun they can be. It’s such a supportive event, really. And, I’m excited because I clocked in at 8:53/mile which is a great time for me - yay! Didn’t break my record yet, but if that’s my starting point, my goal is to get down to 8:00/mile by the end of the summer. I think I can do it;). Still a long way to go before the 1/2 Marathon on August 5th, but I’ll get there.
Hope you’re all having a great day!
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY to all you dads out there!!
Erin
It’s that time of year again! The time when talented and amazing craftspeople, designers, jewelers, musicians, knitters and all around lovely people convene in Williamsburg for the Renegade Craft Fair. I’m sad to say that I didn’t make it last year, but I did go 2 years ago while it was still in McCarren Park. That’s actually where I first saw bag designer, Kristen Aronsson. Lucky for me (and for Clarabella) I held onto her card!
This year the fair is at McCarren Park Pool. For those who think that Williamsburg is a foreign country, or have strange aversions to trekking to Brooklyn (I know you’re out there - I’m friends with some of you!), Williamsburg is only a short train ride from the island of Manhattan. Just head to 14th street and jump on the L train (at 8th ave, 6th ave, union sq., 3rd ave and 1st ave). Take the L to Bedford, the first stop in Brooklyn. Stay near the front of the train and exit at Driggs Ave. Once on the street, note the direction of traffic and walk against it. That will take you North. Keep walking until you hit Lorimer and take a right on Lorimer. The entrance to the pool is between Driggs and Bayard on Lorimer. Fun, easy, you won’t regret it! Click here for a map.
My anticipated favorites for this year?
and last but not least, Clarabella’s very own Nam Kim
All that said, I could come back with totally different favorites! I’m hoping to make it over there when it opens at 11. Tomorrow is a busy day. I’m running a 5 miles race in the morning, hitting up the craft fair, racing to the shop and then leaving early for some much needed home improvements. For thost that have made it this far, it’s very likely I’ll only be open between 1 and 6 tomorrow. See you soon!!
