When it speaks to you

post it;)

A friend just directed me to the Avett Brothers. I’m new to their music, but in checking them out, I stumbled upon something they’ve got on their myspace page. Whether they wrote it, or it came from a friend or even a music biz marketing guy, it’s pretty awesome. So, here it is - and you can check out the tunes here.

————————————————————

If you put your ear to the street, you can hear the rumble of the world in motion; people going to and from work, to school, to the grocery store. You may even hear the whisper of their living rooms, their conversation, their complaints, and if you’re lucky, their laughter. If you’re almost anywhere in America , you’ll hear something different, something special, something you recognize but haven’t heard in a long time. It is the sound of a real celebration.

It is not New Year’s, and it is not a political convention. It is neither a prime time game-show, nor a music video countdown, bloated with fame and sponsorship. What you are hearing is the love for a music. It is the unbridled outcry of support for a song that sings to the heart, that dances with the soul. The jubilation is in the theaters, the bars, the music clubs, the festivals. The love is for a band.

The songs are honest: just chords with real voices singing real melodies. But, the heart and the energy with which they are sung, is really why people are talking, and why so many sing along.

They are a reality in a world of entertainment built with smoke and mirrors, and when they play, the common man can break the mirrors and blow the smoke away, so that all that’s left behind is the unwavering beauty of the songs. That’s the commotion, that’s the celebration, and wherever The Avett Brothers are tonight, that’s what you’ll find.

Nature Boy

In my musical wanderings today, I came across the great Nat King Cole tune, “Nature Boy”. It’s a gorgeous tune, and I’ve always been particularly struck by the lyrics. I thought maybe you might be too;)
There was a boy
A very strange enchanted boy
They say he wandered very far, very far
Over land and sea
A little shy
And sad of eye
But very wise was he

And then one day
One magic day he passed my way
And while we spoke of many things, fools and kings
This he said to me
“The greatest thing you’ll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return

Leoworks Sample Sale

Clarabella darling, Nicole Gagne, will have a very special sample sale this weekend! I don’t want to misrepresent - Nicole won’t actually be here as she’s currently on a trip designed to inspire in Italy for 3 months!! I’m a little envious, but so incredibly thrilled for her. She was kind enough to leave a fabulous selection of her past designs so that we could do a little sale here at the shop. Prices can’t be beat - I don’t think any pieces will be over $70, some going as low as $10 and $20. These are well below not just retail, but also wholesale pricing!

Mystics and Mistresses by Bailey Saliwanchik

Introducing…

BAILEY SALIWANCHIK

I’m so thrilled that Bailey will be the next showcasing artist here at Clarabella. She was a part of the small packages show back in Dec/Jan and all of her pieces sold! Her work has inspired me since I first saw it displayed on the walls of Ai Ai Gasa back in early ‘07. That day, I only took a small print home - you may have seen it posted here. I am now the proud owner of “Red” (scroll down to the bottom to check that one out!!

Point being… I’m a big fan which makes me even more excited to share her work with all of you!

Here are all of the details:

MYSTICS and MISTRESSES
by Bailey Saliwanchik

Artist Reception on Thursday, April 3 from 6-9pm
at Clarabella, 279 E. Houston Street (between Clinton and Suffolk) NY, NY 10002
Showing from April 3 – May 25
Gallery Hours: Tues – Sat 12-8pm, Sun 12-7pm
Wine and Snacks will be served - including an assortment of treats from LES local favorite, How Sweet It Is. Yum!

The wordy stuff:
Boutique/Gallery CLARABELLA is pleased to present MYSTICS and MISTRESSES, a collection of new works by painter BAILEY SALIWANCHIK. The exhibition will be on view from April 3 – May 25 at Clarabella, 279 E. Houston between Clinton and Suffolk Streets. An opening reception for the artist will be held on April 3 from 6 to 9pm at the boutique.

With Mystics and Mistresses, Saliwanchik examines the fantastical ideals of the female form. Representing strength, femininity and independence are her gypsies, princesses, holy women, goddesses, healers, and lovers of nature. She paints women out of a love not only for figurative work, but what she feels is an extreme sensitivity to the female condition. Soft tones and light strokes give way to the whimsical and the imaginary. Soulful eyes reveal depth and intention.

Bailey Saliwanchik was born and raised in the deep woods and swampy fields and blue skies of Maine, emerging with a belief in plant magic and the enchanted female. She loves books by Tom Robbins, the history of symbolism, gin, curls, and pumpkin muffins. Her work is born from a process of intuitive visual construction and a desire to pull beauty from the mess of subconscious stew. She dreams in large buildings with small rooms. She is based in Brooklyn, NY and is currently working with priestesses and the significance of sets of three.

To laugh and be inspired all in one fabulous post.

My friend Eric Laurits just got back from Vegas. In case you need a refresher, Eric and I went to college together way back when;). We were both in a cappella. Oh yes we were. His vocal percussion was SO much better than mine and so was his arranging. We were in different groups though. Anyway, he’s a pretty fantastic guy and also a phenomenal photographer. He did the Clarabella photos (and here) including the one on the home page.

Eric just got back from Vegas. I recently rediscovered his blog and check it often. He posted a recap of his Vegas experience here and ended with this comment:
“Dear all my fabulous friends, new and old. I am who I am because of the people that you are. You have shaped me, inspired me, and pushed me to grow and for that I am ever in your debt. I admire and respect you beyond all measure.”

Wow. It makes me feel better just knowing that there are people like him in the world:).

Take care all and a good night to you -

E

World Water Day - TODAY!!

Our friends over at Charity: Water sent a reminder this morning. Today is World Water Day! In honor of the day, they’ve placed 1500 posters around New York City. Spot one of the ones with the baby bottle, take a picture and send it to Charity: Water and they’ll put it up online. Also, go here to check out their latest video. Apparently, the London Charity: team went to The Central African Republic to check in on the wells and shot the video footage while there. Beck allowed them to use his latest single, “Time Bomb”, as a soundtrack for the 3 minute short. It’s very informative and well put together.

Last, but not least… check out the book Blue Planet Run: the race to provide clean drinking water to the world. You can purchase it on the Charity: Water website. It’s not only an educational coffee table book, it also contributes $70 directly to the building of clean drinking water wells in Africa. Do something amazing and help out today!!
